How do you build your personal brand when you have lived so many lives and worked in different industries?
Having multiple interests feels like standing in front of multiple doors and not knowing which way to go. You have probably been left speechless anytime someone asked you what you do. By the end of this article, you will learn how to talk about what you do. But first, let me validate you.
Your multiple interests are not a weakness; they are your biggest superpower. You just need to learn how to frame it the right way.
As someone with a background in engineering, I was still able to land roles in the communications space without anyone, and I will show you how to do so.
Reframing the "Non-linear" Path
The problem isn't that your career path is messy or unconventional; it’s often just a lack of the right language to explain it. Most career advice assumes a straight line, but you can stand out by learning how to "connect the dots" between seemingly unrelated roles (like engineering and communication) to show your unique value.
Here’s how to find the connecting dots and build your personal brand with multiple interests:
Identifying Your Career Archetype
Understanding which of the four archetypes you fall into helps you choose the right strategy for your next move and that includes your personal brand. These are the four archetypes:
The Specialist: Deep expertise in a specific field.
The Adapter: High range within a single industry.
The Explorer: Driven by curiosity to collect diverse experiences.
The Pioneer: Creating entirely new paths or roles that don't yet exist.

Defining Your Life Task
Your "Life Task" is the consistent theme or skill that appears in every role you’ve ever had, regardless of the industry. Identifying this core strength, such as "simplifying complex ideas to create social impact," provides a solid foundation that anchors your diverse interests into one cohesive professional identity. Ask people who know you what comes to mind when they think about you. You will find that some words begin to come to mind. This is your life task. Another way to find this is to perform a reverse psychology audit.
The Reverse Psychology Audit
To understand how you are truly perceived, you can perform a reverse audit of your CV or social media presence. By using AI or a trusted peer to act as a talent recruiter, you can get an objective view of how you come across. This helps you refine your one-liner and ensures your personal brand aligns with your actual skills.
